Why Volleyball Shoes Are So Expensive? (With Alternatives)

Why Volleyball Shoes Are So Expensive

Not everybody has the ability to afford high quality volleyball shoes, that’s why many new practitioners prefer to use regular cheap sport shoes to practice. To a certain extent, there is nothing wrong with that as far as the intensity is not that high …

But first, did you ever ask the question or wonder why some volleyball shoes are actually expensive? Probably the answer to this question would change some people’s mind who believe that investing in real volley shoes is worthless.

In this article, I breakdown this question so you can judge for yourself whether they are worthwhile or not.

5 reasons why volleyball shoes are expensive …

The quality of used technology, time, research, and development that goes into the shoes affects the production costs and is reflected in the price …

Below 5 important reasons you should know about:

1. Gum rubber

Gum rubber is soft and playable. It is the simple most important element for making volleyball shoes.

It has flexibility and allows great movement on the court as well as a great grip while playing.

Because this item is especially used on volleyball shoes it makes them a little bit more expensive than average shoes.

Quick Tip: When choosing volleyball shoes, of course there are so many criteria that you would need to check. But the most important one is the grip. Always make sure that the shoes have a good quality gum rubber to ensure that. For example these quality volleyball shoes have a great grip that you can actually rely on for intense games & training sessions.

2. Cushion

This feature is used by many brands as a marketing element to sell their product. Though it is a very important thing that increases the cost of the shoes …

Every company has a unique characteristic cushioning method, which is frequently included in the shoe’s name or imprinted directly onto the midsole.

The insole, midsole, and outsole of the shoe can all provide cushioning. Most frequently, a stronger outsole “cages” softer material in an insole or midsole to keep it from compressing too much. The selection of a cushion is important in volleyball.

The better brand has expensive types of shoes if you are looking for the best cushion.

3. Stability

Expensive quality shoes provide stability when you change directions on the court so you can keep your balance and lower your chance of ankle injury.

Depending on what is most comfortable for you, this could entail low-top, mid-top, or high-top support. The most supportive shoe for the ankle is a high-top, but it will also be slightly heavier.

Low-top shoes are preferable if quick, abrupt movements are essential to the position you play on the court…

Mid- and high-top volleyball shoes provide stronger support for side-to-side movements. Low-tops could be a good place to start if you’re unsure or a beginner player.

4. Breathability

Which is the shoe’s ability to keep a player’s foot dry and cool during a game. Some designers will add mesh or vents to the shoe to promote airflow.

High-tech polyester is a wonderful material to have for breathability. When you buy pricey shoes, this is unquestionably a bonus because more expensive brands use higher quality materials.

Keep in mind that some people make the mistake of impacting shoes breathability when they try to customize them!

5. Weight

The weight of a volleyball shoe is one of the important tenets to consider. Because you need to be able to move quickly and change directions suddenly, volleyball shoes are lighter than basketball & tennis shoes.

By the way, you can learn about the difference between volleyball and tennis shoes!

You don’t want footwear that will hinder your movement on the court or cause you to move more slowly.

For competitive players, especially elite athletes, a shoe’s weight is vital. The easier it is for a player to maneuver around the court without losing speed or power, the lighter the shoe is.

Competition footwear should be light and quick. One of the most crucial considerations when reviewing volleyball shoes is durability, and the weight of the shoe is often a good predictor of this.

What volleyball shoe brands are the most expensive?

1. Asics

Very well-known brand that addresses pretty much all sorts of footwear and clothing related to sports. It is also one of the first brands in the market as it has started in the 70s

2. Mizuno

Mizuno has started its journey in the market in the early 90s. It focuses more on footwear designed for males.

Are expensive volleyball shoes worth it?

This mainly depends on the level you are practicing at (amateur, pro or semi-pro) as well as how frequent and intense you practice …

For pros and semi-pros, Volleyball shoes are definitely a worthwhile investment. You’ve heard it right, it is an investment. I’ve called it so, because it has an ROI (Return On Investment) which is a better performance and less probability of injury at least during a whole season.

For amateurs this mainly depends on their budget, if you are an amateur (or even a hobbyist) with a good budget then there is nothing wrong in doing so. You will feel good on your feet; you’ll feel more comfortable and less vulnerable to things like ankle injuries.

Otherwise, you might just use regular sport shoes. Just make sure that they’ve got a good enough grip to avoid slippery on the ground.

Best ways to take care of costly volleyball shoes …

When you have expensive volleyball shoes, then it is very important to take care of them so they can last for a long time.

Because volleyball shoes are used quite often, about 4 to 5 times a week, sometimes more it is really important to keep them clean. Especially the bottom to not cause a grip regressing. You don’t want chemicals to be on your sole for longer than it need be. Cleaning them once every two weeks or so is okay. Cleaning every day can be unpleasant and possibly damaging to the shoe.

You should avoid washing them in the washing machine because that can damage the shoes and make them break and fall apart.

Should you use expensive volleyball shoes in practice?

You can use your expensive shoes both on practice and actual games, or you can save them only for important games and use cheaper ones only for practice.

In my personal opinion, I would save expensive ones for the games, so I can increase their timespan …

By doing so, I can use them for 2 to 3 seasons instead of just one!

Otherwise, if the money is not an issue, then obviously the best thing to do is to use them for both practice and games.

Final Thoughts …

The goal of this article is not to encourage you necessarily to buy expensive volleyball shoes or anything like that. The main goal here is to educate you about the features that you will only find in these kinds of shoes …

By doing so you will make an educated choice whether you need these features or not and so whether you should invest in them or not.

Hopefully this was helpful for you!
